SPECIAL REPORT

Table Tennis Youth Club Championships 2024 on April 20 – Exciting games and a defending champion

With 16 registered double pairings, this competition began with a round of 16 in a knockout system, in which the 8 winners played for the double A title and the losers played for the double B title. In exciting duels in the respective semi-finals and final matches, Maximilian Schmid/Daniel Rosenbaum finally prevailed against Bernadette Loritz/Katharina Peter and won the title of Club Champion Double-B. In the doubles final of performance class A, the winner at the end was Jeremias Kobold/Luca Mammitzsch, who won against Gabriel Kobold/Leonhard Wagner and secured the title of Club Champion Double-A.
Now the eagerly awaited individual competitions began, which were initially played in four groups of 4 in the “Everyone against Everyone” mode. The first and second in each group then advanced to the final round of Youth A, and the third and fourth placed players played for the Youth B Club Champion title. After the group phase, the knockout system was used again with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. The B final was finally Katharina Peter against Stefan Wucher. From the beginning, Stefan Wucher was able to score with his fast serves and after two relatively clear sets he led 2:0. The third set was then very balanced and hard-fought. At a score of 10:9, Katharina Peter even had a set point and was about to turn the game around. However, the ball security on this day was decisive and after a defended set point, Stefan Wucher was also able to win this set and the game. Stefan Wucher thus won the Club Championship-B ahead of Katharina Peter, Maximilian Schmid finished third in the small final against Bernadette Loritz. Simon Scholer, Noa Jakljevic and Agshin Jafarov followed in the other places.
Since the German Table Tennis Association decided to have an open match schedule for women and men last November, our girls also initially competed together with the boys in one competition. At the end of the two performance classes A/B, however, the Club Champions A and B of the girls were finally determined. Bernadette Loritz took 3rd place, Katharina Peter became Club Champion-B and Sayme Amet became Club Champion-A.
The final point of the long tournament day was the final of Youth A in which Sebastian Wucher and Luca Mammitzsch faced each other. The headline of this pairing was very clear from the beginning – attack against defense – which playing style will prevail? The powerful forehand of Sebastian or the safe backhand of Luca. In a 1st set nervously designed by both sides, Sebastian prevailed. In the second set, Luca became more and more confident, countered the topspins with aggressive block balls and immediately managed to equalize the set. The following two sets were always balanced and hard-fought. The game became a thriller with long, great rallies and sets 3 and 4 each ended 11:9. This meant a tie of 2:2 and the decisive 5th set followed. At first, everything looked like a clear victory for Sebastian Wucher, who quickly led 5:1 until the change of ends. With his well-placed serves, he made the game fast, was able to use his offensive forehand successfully again and again and forced his opponent to make mistakes. But Luca was unimpressed and came back to 7:8. A slight pushing error by Luca and a strong forehand point by Sebastian led to match point. It was a game in which both would have deserved the victory, but in the end the powerful game at the table of Sebastian Wucher was decisive and he won the deciding set 11:7 after another strong forehand. Undefeated on this day, he was able to defend his title from the previous year and became Club Champion again. In the small final for 3rd place, Jeremias Kobold prevailed against Sebastian Peter. The other placements in performance class A: 5th Gabriel Kobold, 6th Sayme Amet, 7th Leonhard Wagner and 8th Daniel Rosenbaum.
After an exciting day of the tournament, everyone finally sat together for the award ceremony in the Reichsadler. Department head Roland Arnold congratulated all participants for their great achievements with certificates, as well as trophies for the Club Champions of the boys, girls and doubles. Although some were still brooding over their tournament results, in the end there were only happy faces.
